03 / YOUR QUESTIONS

Before you make the move.

Can I apply while I am in Spain?

Eligible applicants who are legally in Spain may apply for the international teleworker residence authorisation. We review your status before recommending this route.

Can my family join me?

Eligible family members may apply too. Their relationship, dependency where relevant, financial resources and documents need to be assessed.

Is this the same as the Non-Lucrative Visa?

No. The digital nomad route is designed for qualifying remote work. The non-lucrative route does not permit work, including remote work.

04 / PRACTICAL PLANNING

The details behind your move.

Income and family

200% of SMI for the applicant, plus 75% for the first accompanying relative and 25% for each additional relative. Our calculator shows its dated SMI reference and annual-to-monthly calculation; confirm the filing authority’s basis.

Your professional background

A qualifying university, vocational or business-school qualification, or at least three years of professional experience. The foreign company must have been genuinely operating for at least one year; your employment or commercial relationship must predate filing by at least three months.

Employees and freelancers

Employees may work only for companies outside Spain. Self-employed professionals may also work for Spanish companies, provided that work is no more than 20% of their total professional activity.

Documents to prepare
  • Passport, the appropriate application form and fee, criminal-record evidence, financial evidence and proof of health coverage. Foreign public documents generally need an apostille or legalisation unless exempt, and sworn Spanish translation where required.
  • Add contracts, evidence of company activity, qualifications or experience, and an employer letter authorising remote work from Spain and stating the role, salary and working conditions. Include the relevant Social Security documents; private insurance does not replace contribution obligations.
For US employees and applicants
  • Ask HR to review permission to work from Spain and the employer’s Spanish Social Security obligations before you move. A US certificate of coverage is an option only where the bilateral agreement applies and the competent authority issues the appropriate certificate; it is not automatic for every remote worker.
  • For a US consular application, use the Spanish consulate for your legal-residence district and its designated filing provider, if applicable. Check its FBI-record, apostille, translation and appointment instructions; other countries of residence can trigger additional record requirements.
Filing, timing and renewal
  • The consular visa lasts up to one year; an in-country UGE residence authorisation lasts up to three years, or less for a shorter work period. The statutory decision periods are 10 working days for the visa and 20 working days for UGE residence; document requests and appointment availability can affect the overall timetable.
  • To move from the visa to residence, apply during the 60 calendar days before visa expiry. Residence can be renewed for two-year periods while the qualifying conditions continue. Report changes affecting eligibility to UGE; a change of employer or work arrangement needs review.
